Add EU AI Act labels
to your images

Not every AI image needs a visible label under the EU AI Act. Since 2 August 2026, Article 50 requires professional users within its scope to disclose images that qualify as deepfakes: AI-generated or manipulated images resembling real or plausibly real people, objects, places, or events that could falsely appear authentic. Purely personal, non-professional use is excluded from these user obligations. You can also label voluntarily to be transparent. See the European Commission’s explanation.

If disclosure is legally required, failing to provide it can lead to enforcement and fines. The ceiling under Article 99 is €15 million or, for companies, 3% of the previous year’s worldwide turnover, whichever is higher. For small and medium-sized businesses, the lower ceiling applies. These are maximum limits, not automatic fines for individual images; the circumstances and seriousness of the breach matter. Read Article 99 on penalties.

Using AI for an edit does not automatically make an image a deepfake. The result and its context matter: could the changed image mislead viewers about what is real? AI-generated or altered content that meets that test can require disclosure, even if it began as a real photograph. To describe a visibly edited photo with this tool, choose “AI modified”; for an image created by AI, choose “AI generated”. See the official guidance on deepfakes.
